What the VMA’s teaches us about Modern Life - Part 1

As a public speaker, preacher and member of the global community I find that the world at-large is sending out signals. Recently while watching television on a ‘Post-Hurricane Irene Sunday’ I witnessed what many label as a bizarre musical exhibition; the MTV Awards. I believe that what I was observing was modern western civilization encapsulated in a 2 hour show. The younger members of our society were willing to place themselves as advocates for the downtrodden in unique of even obtuse ways. Lady Gaga is a prime example.
At 25, Gaga (real name, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) has emerged as one of the prominent force in pop music today. Her fans, which she affectionately calls “little monsters,” support her ravenously and attribute her music for being “real.” With song titles such as “Just Dance” “Bad Romance” “Born This Way” Lady Gaga has positioned herself as a voice of this generation. Her style of dress and lyrics has scared the beejezus out of religious groups, homophobes and republicans (I guess I said the same thing thrice) everywhere.

On August 28th during the broadcast of MTV’s Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga opened the show dressed a fictitious man, Jo Calderon and put on a performance that is sure to go down in history. Lady Gaga show us that her style does not affect the talent that she possesses is still within. Regardless of how you or I feel about her choice of dress, use of imagery in her videos, political views, etc. we cannot deny she is talented. It is that very talent that allows her to connect those children who feels disenfranchised, disowned and are labeled as outcasts in society.
Today I read a verse in the Bible (Proverbs 29:7 NIV) which states “The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no concern.” I am not going to judge how righteous Lady Gaga is in terms of lifestyle according to the scriptures, but I can say she is right in advocating for the well-being of the down trodden. She represents was has become more common with young adults in the current culture. They are less concern with religious dogma, hard-line politics or focusing on prejudice, but they wish people were allowed to live as they so please with fear verbal of physical abuse in retribution.
When Lady Gaga stepped on the staged during the VMAs in “drag,” smoking a cigarette and using more swear words than a marine in giving birth, the world tuned in. She was not judgmental, but rather he appeared courageous. Gaga stood proxy for millions of young people which wish everyday they could draw as much attention as she does, while doing whatever she pleased. There are possibly millions of people in opposition to Gaga’s music and way of life, but we still notice that above all else she stands as someone connects to people. (Gaga has more twitter followers than anyone else in the world.)
I work in two circles primarily: social service organizations and churches. In both realms there is a deep concern that nihilism, self-loathing and oppositional defiance are attributes found commonplace in youth. If Gaga where to step into either of these circles, she would immediately be labeled with one of these psychological disorder or some other spiritual dysfunction. While either or both could be true, we are missing what it is that she connects to: Love. If we claim to genuinely care for people and have a sincere desire to lead them to a righteous path we must learn to love them first. Before the judgment, therapy, or baths of holy water followed by anointing oil moisturizers: there must be love.
If we cannot reach the young people whom we can touch, there are the Gagas of the world who will love them from a distance. Honestly, who should have more influence?

Where are all the Good Men/.Women?

I have not blogged in a while and I understand that I really need to. So without further ado, let’s talk about Relationships!!!

I have recently made the greatest and easiest decision I have ever mad in my life and that is getting married. Prior to our engagement, my then girlfriend and I knew that we where meant for each other but there lied many frustrations in making that final commitment. But we had to discover that neither one of us were perfect, but we were perfect for each other.

Many people I encounter while speaking, preaching and in my every day life, often complain that there are not enough good men and/or women out here worth marrying. As a result of this marriage, especially in the black community, is not as esteemed as it was in times past. This sentiment is equally shared amongst men and women. Women complain that men are lazy, abusive, unemployed, have bad credit etc. Men complain that women are nags, overbearing, unfit for motherhood, etc. Hence we have finger pointing by all parties.

It is my belief that the reason most people can not find that “one,” is that they are too focused on the characteristics of a mate and not concerned about getting themselves together. I met my wife in college while we were both pursuing the education need to further our lives. At the time we met we were not interested in having a relationship. It was our mutual interest and attraction to each other’s drive that led us to be together naturally.

Some people too much time online on social networking sitea, watching television, clubbing and other activities that should be novelties, not lifestyles. These activities become counter productive to reaching one’s goals, meeting worthwhile people and become an active citizen in the world’s culture.

Get active in things that will help you and others become better people. Join a charitable organization, join a book club, become a mentor, go back to school – let your focus be on improving you, then God will send that mate that can match your lifestyle.

I was nowhere perfect when my wife and I met, but she seen that inside of me there was a person who could become great. She prayed about it, observed my lifestyle and listened to my aspirations. She then knew in her heart that I could be complimentary to her vision for own life and provide the love that she desire.

My main point is that there are plenty of good men and women out there in the world. But if you are absent to the good arenas that the world provide, you will have a harder time finding someone worthwhile.

WORK ...we all gotta do it!

Your resident youth minister is now a working man! Well... I have been working for a month now, and boy I realize that office work may not be my TRUE calling.

I am working in the office of a pretty well-to-do Construction company. And things are going okay, but my encouragement to you all is to pursue your passion!

While I am working I am still pursuing my own dreams. I can not tell you how many people I know say that they wish they took another job or went back to school for something else. Take my advice while you can never settle for less!

I am not totally complaining about this job, because it is paying the bills (and that is ALWAYS good!) But I'd much rather be getting paid to write or speak and that is my dream and goal. What is yours? ...well why are you sitting there then? …get to it!

Pop, Lock and Drop It!

I have had it with hip hop.

Traditionally hip hop has had songs associated with dance and vice-versa. The Humpty Dance, Tootsie Roll and the most popular dance of all THE ELECTRIC SLIDE But this is ridiculous...

Pop Lock and Drop it?!

Dances these days don't even require skill, dexterity, or even much movement. This is crazy!! I am an old school soul.

Back when you needed to be a rapper in order to rap. Not a con-artist trying to make a song with catchy hook. Rap was the language of the culture of hip hop. We identify with the joy, struggle and comedy that were explained with linguistic prowess.

Now we have people doing this...

Heaven help us

I have to work

I am sorry this video made me laugh, lets pray that lady is alright.

It's President's Day and many of you have to go to work...but I do. I am not going to hate on you thought. I do not have much time to write now, but I am encouraging you to read my last post. Consider it a refresher. I will definitely have a new entry tommorow.

Today's thought: We are celebrating the leader's of our country, but who do you let lead you?

Until then I love you all (real men don't have to say no homo!)

On A Personal Note...(family)

That video made me feel good today. Go to the 6:00 minute mark and listen to that song. I am man enough to say it makes me cry every time I hear it.

I am going to be a bit more personal in this post. If I feel up to it I wiill do my usual social commentary later today...

There are two words I use to govern my life: Love and Justice. Justice is equal rights, opportunities and punishments for everybody. Love is being able to empathize and be willing to replace yourself with another person when they are in trouble.

There is a lack of each surrounding me.

I have a younger sibling whom I love dearly. But at times I do not feel that they do not receive the love and justice that someone so deserving does. The sad fact is that sometimes our own family mistreats and ignores issue they may have.

Only two short days from "Valentine's Day" I feel a lack of love already. But it is only encouragement, to press on with my dream. I am a preacher and motivational speaker; it is my job to spread love. I am going to help my sibling make it. I guarantee you all that.

Furthermore, I will become successful! If you are in needed and are near me I am coming for ya! (lol)

Life Lesson: Love your family to the maximum. Call someone you haven't talk to in a while. And just let them know you love them and are there for them!

Leave a Comment for me, if can. It would really help me today.

Thank all of you for supporting me. I am trying to start a movement of people who understand Jesus was not lazy, quiet or a punk. In our terms he was gangsta. If you want to support this movement email me at philleekid02@yahoo.com and ask for the code for one of my "Jesus was Gangsta" banners for add to your Myspace, Friendstet or any other web page you have.

50 CENT VS. PRESIDENT BUSH

The Saga Continues...

Will Black Men Exterminate
Themselves?

I really want to be able to address all the good that black males are doing to create a great example of what black people are to the enriching society...There are really black men you do such. But it is hard when those who get the most attention are those brothers.

Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent and Cameron Giles aka Cam'ron are involved it what the hip hop community calls "beef." In other words they do not like each other. It started with a radio interview on a WIDELY listen to station in which 50 was involved, that Cam'ron called in and insulter our friend Curtis. This is the Main Topic of discussion in black school, corners and barber shops.

What saddens me is that both of these men are 31 years of age and fathers.

We are living in a time where the opportunity to showcase African-American talent is at an all time high. (Notice I said opportunity, not this does mean it is easy or thoroughly being used.)

We have a black man running for a democratic nomination in which he has the opportunity to win, but is currently in second place.

Barack Obama is being chastised by the media and being labeled a terrorist, drug addict and unsuitable candidate. Instead of websites like allhiphop, sohh and other hip-hop (black) youth oriented site promoting him we are watching the "diss videos of Cam'ron and 50.

These black men have global power. They move the world when they speak and we anticipate there next move. Imagine if 50 or Cam decided it was "gangsta" to vote or “gangsta” of be political knowledgeable. And instead of beefing with each other, they demanded a debate with G.W. Bush.

Imagine the headlines:

50 CENT DEMANDS BUSH PROVIDE BETTER EDUCATION FOR BLACK CHILDREN

I can only dream...
